Have you ever wondered why some PLCs start off and continue strong, while others don’t seem to get off the ground? My first encounter with the term “PLC” left me puzzled in the principal’s office, admitting candidly that I was unfamiliar with the concept.  He told me that I may not know the acronym but I knew what it was.  When he explained it to me, it was then I realized that I was already engaging in some sort of PLC activities with my team, just without the formal label. This moment was akin to when I discovered what anchor charts were, only to find out that my classroom was adorned with them, integral to my teaching practice, yet I hadn’t known the formal term.

This realization underscores a common oversight in educational settings: we often presume that teachers inherently know how to execute effective PLCs. We allocate time, provide directives, and then, somewhat naively, step back, expecting seamless operation. Yet, we are taken aback when some PLCs falter while others flourish. My journey through the planning and implementation of school-wide PLCs across different campuses revealed this disparity starkly. Initially, as a teacher unfamiliar with PLCs, I stumbled through the process. Later, as I gained formal training and experience, especially in my role as an instructional coach, the gaps in my understanding and practice became evident.
