Modern decoding tools for intermediate and secondary classrooms.

Multisyllabic decoding and reading intervention materials for grades 3–12 — built with teachers and improved through classroom pilots.

Curriculum power — back in the hands of teachers.

Built with teachers. Versioned through classroom pilots. Improved with every release.

Teacher feedback isn't a testimonial at the end — it's part of the build. Every release is shaped by what works in real classrooms: limited minutes, mixed skill gaps, and student dignity.

PILOT RELEASE · v0.9 (Teacher-validated)
The Problem

Reading intervention for upper grades shouldn't feel elementary.

Most decoding intervention materials for upper elementary and middle school students fall into two categories:

  • Repackaged elementary phonics worksheets
  • Comprehensive programs that move too slowly to adapt

Meanwhile, teachers are working with students who can comprehend grade-level text — but freeze at multisyllabic words.

Student needs shift in real time. Teachers adjust daily. Materials don't.

Juniper Reading CoLab was built to close that gap.

The Model

The Model Behind the Tools

Juniper Reading CoLab tools aren't one-time curriculum purchases. They're versioned decoding tools — built, tested, refined, and improved through short classroom cycles inspired by PLC data loops.

Create Pilot Review Teacher-Verified Refine Release

This is not curriculum publishing. It's disciplined iteration. Teachers are the review cycle. Their feedback determines what stays, what changes, and what ships. We design for real constraints — limited minutes, mixed skill gaps, and the need for materials that fit real classrooms.

Pilot Cohort

Join Future Pilot Cohorts

The Pilot Cohort is structured co-design — across both Juniper Decode and Juniper Pathfinder. Members:

  • Test decoding tools and Pathfinder in real classrooms
  • Participate in short-cycle review for both products
  • Influence what ships next — materials and the planning tool
  • Receive early access to new versions before public release

You'll see your feedback show up in the next release.

Teachers are not end users of curriculum. They are co-designers.

Teacher Signal

What the initial teacher survey discovered

In February 2026, an initial survey of educators identified the following classroom needs. These responses directly shaped the design of both Juniper Decode and Pathfinder.

Time constraint

"We have 43 min classes to teach all things ELA so short bursts of learning are most helpful."

Classroom teacher — Grades 6–8
Usability

"Time requirements allowed it to be integrated into current district curriculum requirements."

Classroom teacher — Grades 6–8
Not another program

"It wasn't just 'another thing' for teachers to do but something that would actually support them."

Librarian — Grades 3–5
Adoption barrier

"My only barrier is district/site approval."

Classroom teacher — Grades 3–5

We Build in Public

The Juniper Reading CoLab Substack documents the build — pilot results, version notes, what we're learning, and what's shipping next. No noise. No hype. Just honest iteration from inside a real product studio.

  • Pilot release notes — what changed and why
  • Teacher feedback that shaped each version
  • Behind-the-build posts on curriculum design and responsible AI
  • Early access announcements for new tools and cohort openings

Transparency builds trust. The Substack is where that happens.

FAQ

Common Questions

Is Pathfinder actually free?
Yes. Pathfinder is free for teachers — no trial period, no credit card, no expiration. The sandbox requires no sign-up at all. A free account with your school email saves your data across sessions. That's the full distinction. There's no premium tier gating the features teachers actually need.
What does Juniper Decode cost?
Pathfinder stays free. Juniper Decode lessons — the actual classroom practice materials — will be available for purchase. The free sample gives you a complete set to try first. The model is straightforward: the planning tool is free, the materials are what you buy when you're ready to use them at scale.
Will this work on Chromebooks and school networks?
Both tools are browser-based. No downloads, no installs, no IT request required to get started. Pathfinder runs entirely in the browser. Juniper Decode practice activities are built in Genially — accessible via shared link or QR code on any Chromebook. Students never create accounts. That removes the most common tech barrier before it becomes one.
How much time does this actually take?
Decode routines are designed for 10–15 minute blocks. They fit inside existing intervention periods, small group rotations, or the first few minutes of an ELA block — without displacing what's already scheduled. Pathfinder takes about 5 minutes to enter a class set of assessment scores. The output is a ready-to-use scope and sequence. The design assumption throughout is that teachers don't have time to spare. That constraint shaped every decision.
Do I need district approval to use this?
For independent classroom use: no. Pathfinder is a teacher planning tool — students never log in, no new student data is collected, and no district IT integration is required. Decode practice activities use no-login links. That said, some districts will want a formal Data Privacy Agreement before authorizing use at scale. That process is supported and documented. If your district needs it, it's ready.
Who built this — and why should I trust it?
Juniper Reading CoLab was built by Genevra Self — 20+ years as a classroom teacher and instructional coach in public education, with the last year spent as an Education Implementation Manager at an EdTech startup, building teacher training and implementation support from the ground up. The work here comes from watching well-designed tools fail at the classroom level because implementation was an afterthought. These tools are built by someone who has seen that breakdown — and designed specifically to avoid it.
